A Background Check that Makes Sense

— By Polydamas

None of our avid readers here at The Cassandra Times should have been surprised in the least by Jenny Deam’s article in the Los Angeles Times, dated April 4, 2013, titled “James Holmes’ Psychiatrist Warned He May Pose Threat.” (http://lat.ms/14IM7ds). In her article, Ms. Deam reported that the recently unsealed documents concerning the Aurora, Colorado mass murderer revealed that he possessed “prescription medication for sertraline, a generic version of Zoloft used to treat depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder; and Clonazepam, usually prescribed to treat anxiety and panic attacks.”

In our December 16, 2012 article titled “The Sandy Hook Massacre’s Hidden Psychiatric Drug Angle”, we had predicted that “James Holmes who killed 12 movie theater goers and wounded 58 others in July of 2012 in Aurora, Colorado was a psychiatric patient and was likely prescribed drugs by his doctors.” We had pointed out in that article that Welsh psychiatrist David Healy website (http://www.ssristories.com/) chronicles 4,800 news stories and articles about individuals who had been prescribed by their doctors anti-depressants known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). These drugged psychiatric patients proceeded to commit various mass murders, school shootings, hostage takings, suicides, and other criminal and antisocial behaviors.

In our December 18, 2012 follow up article titled “Government and Big Pharma Are Responsible For School Massacres”, we reprinted an earlier June 28,1999 article by Kelly Patricia O’Meara in Insight Magazine. Ms. O’Meara reported about the “connection between the otherwise seemingly senseless acts of violence being committed by school-age children and prescription psychotropic drugs such as Ritalin, Luvox and Prozac”. Ms. O’Meara noted that there were “nearly 6 million children in the United States between the ages of 6 and 18 taking mind-altering drugs” but “although the list of school-age children who have gone on violent rampages is growing at a disturbing rate — and the shootings at Columbine became a national wake-up call — few in the mental-health community have been willing to talk about the possibility that the heavily prescribed drugs and violence may be linked”.

It should be recalled that, back in 1999, when when Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed their Columbine High School classmates in Littleton, Colorado, a federal law banning the so-called “assault weapons” had been in effect. After September 13, 1994, the Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, 18 USC Section 921, had banned semiautomatic rifles, pistols, shotguns, and magazines containing more than 10 rounds, but that federal law evidently did not stop Harris and Klebold.

Nevertheless, committed liberals like Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and her cohorts in the United States Senate, the Obama administration, and in the various blue state legislatures persist in their attempts to delude their lemming-like constituents that the existing laws are just not strict enough and that we need even stricter laws, as if stricter laws could ever deter drugged-out psychopaths. Of course, the truth is that not one of these liberal politicians really cares about the victims of gun violence. What they really care about is rolling back the Second Amendment and disarming the American people so that they will not face effective armed revolt by the people when they surrender American sovereignty to the United Nations. Their long game is the erasure of national boundaries and traditions, the joining together of economies, and the establishment of a one-world socialist government whose secular religion is radical environmentalism bordering on Mother Gaia worship. Moreover, if billionaire financier George Soros had his druthers, the only language spoken on Earth would be Esperanto.

Universal firearm registration is being sold to the American people as the only effective means of conducting thorough background checks in order to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the insane. However, if we truly wanted an effective background check that kept weapons out of the hands of criminals and the insane, we here at The Cassandra Times have a modest proposal. Instead of the ass backwards solution of the federal government keeping lists of law-abiding gun owners, The Cassandra Times  proposes that a consortium of private companies establish an Internet-accessible website that contains a national list of prohibited possessors. Why not have a private website like www.mugshots.com or www.mugshotsonline.com that lists the name and contain the photograph of every person who has been convicted of a felony that would prevent him or her from owning a firearm? Add to the database of prohibited possessors every inmate of every insane asylum and every person under the care of a psychiatrist and taking psychotropic drugs such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs).

The above free, banner advertising-supported private system could completely replace the federal National Instant Check System (NICS). There would be no record retention of any legitimate, law-abiding purchasers of firearms so that the federal government would know who has firearms and who does not. The privacy interests of the law-abiding would be protected. Liberal one-world government politicians and apparatchiks would not have at their disposal lists of firearm owners and would not know who needs to be disarmed.

The enforcement of existing laws which prohibit the transfer by private citizens of firearms to prohibited possessors, such as felons and the insane, would be enhanced. The system we propose is essentially the same as the Blind Identification Database System (“BIDS”) proposed by Brian Puckett and Russ Howard in 2001. (http://www.gunlaws.com/BIDSvNICS.htm). We at The Cassandra Times would add the requirements that the system be owned by private newspapers or Internet content publishers, who would perform the service under the protection of the First Amendment to the Constitution and that the online records be accessible via the Internet to gun dealers as well as private citizens. Additionally, firearm dealers and private citizens who sold firearms to any individuals who were not on the list of prohibited possessors as of the of the sale would be completely immune from prosecution.

This BIDS system, as modified, is the only background checks system for gun sales that is agreeable to us at The Cassandra Times.
