An Object Lesson About the Importance of the Secret Ballot

— by Polydamas

There can be no better and more poignant example of how the American left enforces conformity and compliance with its political and ideological diktats as in the above video.

In this video, a young African-American boy of eight years of age, voted for Republican candidate Donald Trump at his elementary school’s mock presidential elections. The boy had seen Donald Trump on television. In retaliation, his mother packed his belongings and forced the terrified, bawling child out of their Texas house. This was his punishment for watching Donald Trump on the television, thinking for himself, and choosing to exercise his own judgment as to which political candidate deserved his mock vote. She videotaped herself castigating her terrified son for his mock vote. She proudly posted this video to her Facebook page, which was later posted to YouTube.

African-Americans have been subjected to horrific abuse for following their consciences. United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was defamed and called an “Uncle Tom” and a traitor to his race for the sin of being a Republican. The same is true of Republican presidential candidates Dr. Ben Carson, Alan Keyes, and Herman Cain.

Is it a wonder why so few African-Americans choose to vote or publicly admit that they voted for candidates other than Democrat? Is it a mystery why members of other racial and ethnic minorities do not dare to vote for Republican, Independent, and Libertarian candidates? Is it a surprise that union workers, college students, and the elderly in assisted living facilities overwhelmingly vote for Democratic candidates?

There are certain lessons to be learned here.

First, the only way to protect dissenting members of racial and ethnic minorities from threats and intimidation by the enforcers of ideological conformity is to abolish almost entirely voting by mail and voting by internet. The only time that dissenting minorities can freely vote is by secret ballot, behind a curtain, and at a public voting booth. At that moment, the voter is free to vote according to his or her own conscience and desires, removed from the coercion of group orthodoxy.

The abused wife, the brow-beaten husband, the harassed college student, the union worker intimidated by union representatives, and the senior citizen who is subjected to undue influence are protected by a vote in public by secret ballot. Then, after they have voted, they can safely lie to their tormentors about voting for the prescribed  candidate without fear of reprisals, just as the young boy in the video will learn to do.

As a corollary, voting by mail or by internet must be the rare exception to the rule and reserved to seriously ill and physically incapacitated people who are unable to vote at a public voting booth. Every such vote should be witnessed by a doctor, a notary public, and at least two election officials of different parties to ensure that the vote was free of coercion and undue influence.

Second, just as the eight-year-old boy in the video will learn a lifelong lesson to hide his political inclinations from others, fear of reprisals by the forces of liberal orthodoxy is also the reason that few people in the so-called enlightened coastal cities in Blue America and few members of racial and ethnic minorities dared to admit to the various pollsters that they intended to vote for Republican Donald Trump. Simply stated, voters lied to protect themselves. Thus, the incorrect data caused pollsters to overstate the popular support for Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and to understate the true support for her opponent. Hence, even the exit polls in the 2016 election were unreliable, which led Hillary Clinton to prematurely measure new drapes for the White House.

Punishing dissenters for daring to think for themselves is the hallmark of the so-called enlightened 21st century liberalism. Accordingly, the secret ballot in a public voting booth is one of the best weapons against leftists, collectivists, and totalitarians.
